Health Benefits of Blackberry

Below are some of the health benefits that come from eating blackberries.

Antioxidant Power – anthocyanin, which gives blackberries their dark color, is an antioxidant that has been shown to reduce inflammation.

Antioxidants help to battle free radicals in the body, which are cancer causing substances. The recommended dose is one cup of blackberries to it's antioxidant properties a day.

Immune Health – Vitamin C is another antioxidant that the blackberry contains. Vitamin C is important for overall health. It aids in giving the immune system an extra boost that helps prevent colds.

Digestive Tract Health – guess what? One cup of blackberries contains over 30% of the daily recommended amount of fiber.

Fiber is crucial for maintaining bowel regularity. It works by bulking up the feces thus reducing the time it takes for it to pass through the intestines; therefore, eliminating harmful toxins in a more timely fashion. Healthy bowel regularity can help reduce the risk for colon cancer.

Vitamin K – blackberries are an excellent source of vitamin K. Vitamin K is used by the body for the normal clotting of blood and to aid the absorption of calcium.

Blackberry Tips

  • Select firm, plump, fully black, berries – remember un-ripe berries will not ripen once they are picked.
  • There are two types of blackberries: thorn-less and thorny! Obviously, the thorn-less would be easier to pick, but when picking the thorny ones just remember to reach into the gaps in the bush to avoid the thorns - don't get cut.
  • A ripe blackberry will pull free from the plant with just a slight tug. A ripe blackberry is usually deep black, plump, and feels full.
  • DON’T wash your berries until you are ready to eat them, washing them makes them more prone to spoiling.
  • If you go to a blackberry farm to pick - don’t pile your berries more than 5 inches deep; because, they tend to bruise each other by the added weight.

Healthy Additions for your Blackberry Smoothie Recipes

Flax Seed Oil – for a boost in the omega 3 department add a tablespoon of flax seed oil.
