The Health Benefits of a Broccoli Smoothie will have you Jumping for Joy!

A broccoli smoothie can be a little tricky to make, but no worries we’ll walk you through it. Preferably using a high powered blender would be ideal due to the fact that chopping of those little flowers can be a little over whelming to a lower horse-power blender.

Well let’s get started, below are some ideas and suggestions on how to make your broccoli smoothies!

How to Use Broccoli in your Smoothie

If you have a high powered blender then you’re probably good to go, but if you have a department store blender (which is good too) then you will probably want to limit yourself to adding 1 cup or less of broccoli, because regardless of what blender you are using it’s a challenge to thoroughly blend up those florets.

Also, broccoli has a tendency to be a little on the bitter side so you will want to pare it with a strongly favored fruit. Freezing your broccoli before you blend it up makes it a little bit easier to work with and tends make it less bitter then the completely raw form.

Health Benefits of Broccoli

Nervous System – because of the amount of potassium that broccoli contains it is very beneficial nervous system. Potassium helps to carry oxygen to the brain thus keeping everything in good working order “up there” it is an indispensible mineral to the nervous system.

Eye Health – broccoli consiste of two phytonutrient antioxidants called Lutein and Zeaxanthin.

These two carotenoids are the only two that are found in the retina and the lens of the eye. Thus eating foods high in lutein and zeaxanthin promote healthy eyes by fighting free radical damage.

Immune System – vitamin C is essential for fortifying the immune system because it’s a wonderfully powerful antioxidant. Not only does broccoli have a great vitamin C content but it also contains useful amounts of the trace minerals: zinc and selenium which act as back-up for immune defense.

Remember to Rotate

Like kale broccoli is also from the cruciferous plant family this is important to know; because, cruciferous means you will need to rotate your greens. Greens are good, but too much of a good thing is not necessarily good.

Always remember to rotate the green leaves you put in your smoothie; because, most all greens contain small amount of what is called alkaloids.

Now tiny quantities of alkaloids cannot hurt you, and will even strengthen the body’s immune system, but consuming the same green such as kale (or any other cruciferous green) for weeks and weeks without rotating can cause a buildup of alkaloids in the body’s system.

This problem can be easily solved by rotating your veggies. Now there are other reasons and benefits to rotating your greens other than the one mentioned above. Adding a variety of leafy greens in your smoothie diet promotes nutritional benefits from all different sources.

*Note that rotating fruit is not necessary; fruit contains very little to no alkaloids & cannot cause the same reaction. Although rotating your fruits will change the flavor of your smoothie, it is not necessary to avoid alkaloids.

Protein Additives for you Smoothie Recipes

iherb.com

Adding quality sources of protein to your broccoli smoothie has the ability to turn it into a complete meal! Here are our recommended sources of protein:

Hemp Protein Powder - is high in protein, healthy omega 3 fats and fiber. That is why we call hemp seed the triple deluxe…protein, omega 3’s, fiber…sounds good to us!

Vega Protein Powder - is a clean, plant-based protein with good wholesome nutrition. Natural, quality ingredients will keep your healthy, active lifestyle yummy.

Vega has many different types of protein powder, (sport protein, and protein one) but for everyday life we use the Vega ONE which comes in all different flavors. (our favorite is chocolate)

Sun Warrior Protein Powder - is a wonderful protein powder. It is a plant based powder that comes in three different flavors!

Now, we don’t recommend that you use “cheap” (and by cheap we mean bad quality) sources of protein. Why? Because of the artificial ingredients. Often they are processed with heat and certain methods that don’t protect the protein molecules; therefore, you get an inferior quality.

Protein is important to our bodies and consuming “bad quality” can do more harm than good. That's just one of the reasons why we recommend a natural complete form of protein for optimal health.
