Both Chlorella and Spirulina are considered superfoods; because, the nutrients they contain are easily absorbed by the body. Not to mention that their multivitamin and antioxidant levels are extremely high!

What is Chlorella and Spirulina?

Chlorella: is a type of single-celled, fresh water algae that's been gaining wide popularity for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. Naturally, chlorella is a round shaped green algae that is anywhere from 2 to 10 micrometers in diameter. This particular supplement is rich in: beta-carotene, protein, essential fatty acids, as well as chlorophyll.

Spirulina: is also an algae, but more of a blue-green algae. (Algae’s are differentiated by color) Spirulina is a blue-green algae because of its chlorophyll (green) and phycocyanin (blue) pigments in its cell wall.

It tends to be a larger algae commonly being 0.5 millimeters in length, close to a 100 times the size of most “normal” algaes.

Both Chlorella and Spirulina grow well in warm, fresh, alkaline bodies of water.

Just one tablespoon of chlorella or spirulina will give you the same nutritional value that several servings of vegetables will. You are supposed to consume 5-6 serving of fresh fruits and vegetables a day, but most people don’t even do that.

Great Source of Easily Digestible Proteins: spirulina has an amazing protein content with 22% protein in comparison to beef. It also contains all of the essential amino acids necessary for protein, - if you are looking for a good vegetarian protein source – this is a good option.

Very Alkaline: nearly all refined foods are acidic (made with sugars, white flours etc…) which makes up a lot of the Standard American Diet. The pH in a person’s body is vitally important, alkaline means healthy, and acidic means there is room for disease to grow.

Both chlorella and spirulina are alkaline foods, this means they work to counter act acidic foods thus balancing the pH. Consuming more alkaline foods has been linked to a stronger immune system.

Detoxifying Agent: spirulina has been known to help remove toxins such as mercury and radioactive substances from the body. Chlorella is known to bind toxic metals and to carry them out of the body, while chlorella contains a pigment called: chlorophyll that is especially helpful in the detoxifying process.

Vitamin Rich: these two superfoods are rich in vitamins E, B12, C, B1, and B6. B vitamins are a great source for wholesome energy – when consumed in the food form. Both of these foods are extremely nutrient dense with many different vitamin, minerals and antioxidants.

Why Use Chlorella & Spirulina

Each one of these superfoods have unique health benefits all of their own, but together they are dynamite! If you lack leafy greens in your diet chlorella and spirulina can help make up for it, and then some!

Just a teaspoon (3-4 grams) of either one is a teaspoon packed full of vitamins, mineral and antioxidants that you wouldn’t otherwise get.

Which One is Better: Chlorella or Spirulina?

Honestly, it's your choice! Both of them are excellent sources of vitamins minerals, antioxidants...etc. But for us, we prefer using the Chlorella just because it mixes better in smoothies, it's taste is not as bland, and we think it tends to be a little better quality.

Chlorella and Spirulina Smoothies?

Absolutely! You know us, we’ll put anything in a smoothie! These two superfoods have the ability to take your ordinary smoothie up a couple of notches.

You can add chlorella for a chlorophyll rich smoothie or spirulina for a vitamin packed smoothie or you can add both for a dynamite packed smoothie.

For Chlorella: we would recommend the powder form since it’s easier to add to your smoothie; although, if you are on the "go" tablets might be nice to have on hand.

When buying chlorella be sure to get a brand that features a broken or cracked cell wall – this means, they have taken the tough, indigestible portion of the cell wall and broken it so that your body can readily absorb the nutrients found inside.
