What Does Low Fat Mean?

Well, contrary to what people think, low fat does not just mean a lower fat content. It actually means that it has to be at least 3 grams or less of fat content in order to qualify as a low fat food.

However, there is a caution with low fat foods. One is: they tend to be processed. Two, they tend to have artificial colorings and flavorings in them.

Also, low fat foods contain a lot of full-fat counter parts because of the extra sugars that have to be added to make up for the loss of taste when the fat is removed.

So, you have to remember you may be eating low fat or fat free foods, but ask yourself: what replaced the fat? Depending on the type of food low fat is not always better.

Naturally Low Fat Smoothies

Banana Pomegranate Smoothie

1 cup mixed berries

1 banana

¼ cup pomegranate or 1/8 cup pomegranate juice

1 cup water

1 cup ice

Green Summer Smoothie

1 tbsp honey

1 cup honeydew

¼ cup cucumber, peeled

1 cup water

1 small handful spinach

1 pear, peeled

1 cup ice

Broccoli Banana Smoothie

1 cup water

3 broccoli florets

1 banana

1 cup ice

1/8 cup grapes, seeded

2 kiwis, peeled

3 to 4 strawberries, capped

*you can add a handful of spinach for some added nutrition

½ lemon, juiced
