Why not spread a little holiday cheer with a classic peppermint smoothie?

Peppermint is definitely the long standing classic when winter comes, and brings along with it the Christmas Spirit!

Before we dive into the smoothie recipes lets take a look at where peppermint comes from….?

Where does Peppermint come From?

Good question! It seems to have always been around at Christmas time, breath fresheners, traditional candy canes etc… But really, where does it come from?

Well, peppermint is a herb that is actually considered to be a hydrid; meaning, it’s a cross between watermint herb and the spearmint herb.

This plant grows to be about 12-35 inches tall with its leaves being anywhere from 1-3 inches long, and they grow best in shaded, moist areas.

What is Peppermint Oil?

Peppermint oil is the concentration of the health benefiting juices of the plant. Peppermint oil (when in the pure form) is considered to be one of the many "essential oils", this particular one being both refreshing and rejuvenating.

Now, you can use peppermint oil or peppermint extract in your smoothies, but just one caution. Do not put peppermint essential oil into a plastic blender, it is a very concentrated liquid and should only be used in a glass container.

If all you have is a plastic blender jar, then that is ok too. Just blender up your smoothie, pour the drink into a glass, then add your peppermint oil.

Should I use Peppermint Oil or Peppermint Extract in my Smoothies?

You can use either one; it is up to you! We prefer the peppermint oil just because of the health benefits that are associated with using it, but peppermint extract is often the more economical and convenient choice, but again it is your choice!

If you decide to use peppermint essential oil, just a drop will give you all the flavor you could ever ask for, remember it is highly concentrated.
